Upper Sunwapta Falls (the part close to the road; note tourist in the distance). This is, incredibly, on the Sunwapta River.

Upper Sunwapta Falls from the bridge. This image is included just for interest: a different film a different camera. The lack of acutance is due to the small file size. (It's a trade-off; large file, good acutance; small file, fuzzy details. Sorry.)

The Lady Isabelle at Sunwapta Falls. Note that she is still wearing her jacket, meaning we haven't begun the hike to the lower falls. She is smirking because she's standing next to a really weird tree, and this is fun. This image is here to show just how easily entertained we are.

Lower Sunwapta Falls is a series of 3 progressively more spectacular falls that begins with this little veil of water. The rock below the lower border of the picture slopes downward for about 20 feet -- you can walk on it when it's dry after you climb over the safety fence, built to keep fools back -- then drops away into a foaming cauldron that immediately tumbles down a series of ledges. Just inside the fence is a commemorative plaque place by a family in memory of their 20 year old son, who "lost his life accidentally at this spot." I can imagine the terror of a happy lad whose feet unexpectedly slipped on this sloped rock. I can only hope that no one bears the burden of having been horsing around with him or egging him to go closer.

The tourist information always says these round potholes are made by swirling water, and surely many are. But small ones such as these must be formed from round inclusions in the rock plus water's action.

That's probably Dragon Peak in the top left distance.

Isa has doffed her jacket, a sign that she's taken the hike to Lower Sunwapta Falls and has been warmed thereby. She is smiling cheerfully despite having been asked to stand on a triangle of rock overhanging icy water 15 meters below. We are more compatible than we realized...

OK, this proves that I made the walk to Lower Sunwapta Falls also...

The Sunwapta River, taking a breather in the form of class 2 rapids after tumbling over the lower falls, coursing northwestward for a short time before merging with the Athabasca River. Mount Christie looks through the boughs in the background.
