Volunteers work in pairs. For a regular volunteer, this means sitting at a table with another volunteer for one hour a week , and retrieving bags when clients stop by.
We also have a need for substitutes who can fill in for regular volunteers. If you would like to try out HSP but aren't sure if you want to commit to working every week for a semester, being a substitute might be a good option for you.
You can study when you aren't taking care of items. The amount of time you spend accessing items varies a lot from week to week. On average roughly half the time is spent accessing bags, and half the time is available for studying (or talking). It is important that those who volunteer show up reliably for their shifts and notify the coordinator in advance if they will need a substitute. Working as a volunteer is generally a one-semester commitment (fall, spring, or summer term).
