Some Unknowns about Sweat-Salt Loss
- Does a person who normally eats a low-salt diet lose a lot of salt when unacclimatized?
- Probably not, as we have tremendous ability to conserve salt, but this takes 3-5 days to induce.
- Is the reduced salt excretion seen after acclimatization due to salt deficiency?
- Probably not, as it occurs with salt replacement.
- Advice:
- Don't choose the acclimatization period to start a low-salt diet.
- If you are on a low-salt diet, moderate it while acclimatizing.
- If you feel light-headed on standing, eat or drink more salty food.
