As we age, physical changes occur gradually, and ability is generally maintained at a plateau until disease or physical senescence degrade ability.
Most loss of ability is due to the effects of disease or injury. In the US, the disease that's most likely to erode ability is adult-onset diabetes. The disease most like to decrease physical capacity is heart disease.
The age at which disease strikes is mostly a matter of chance, for the onset and occurrence of any given disease is unpredictable.
