The Castle Mound, 64 feet tall and 210 feet around at the base, photographed over the fence by Laura sitting on Jeremiah's shoulders. The vanished castle was built in 1071 by Robert d'Oilly to guard the nearby crossing of the Thames. It was one of a series of castles built one day's march apart so that soldiers could sleep safely, and do their maurading well rested.

The Castle Mound, is that green in the distance along New Road (nee Queen Street, nee High Street), not that castellated thing in the near distance, which is a defunct police station.

This is the back side of the old court house and jail. When old buildings become unusable in Oxford, we make them into Tourist Attractions.

At the right magnification, on screen, you can actually read this sign. It has more information that I care to type offhand.
