Stickers had been put on this car's glasss, and a boot on its right front tyre. One said, "untaxed car," which probably implies a payment failure. The car had been there for days, and was absent this evening and afterward. We were told that the parking police set the fines and work on commission. Think of this before you rent a carin England.

Brewer Street looking east. The wall of Pembroke College is on the left. The college was built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries with Cotswold stone, but I'd guess the wall is older.

This date is carved on the end of a beam of an old hotel/pub at the north end of MAgpie Lane, Oxford, opposite Oriel College. I have no idea if it's genuine or if it was created to wow people. But it is difficult to find and to see, perhaps evidence for it being genuine.

The airplane landed in rain and our bags were drenched; we walked to the bus a week later through drizzle; and in between there was only fine or fair weather. (Fair = sunny, fine = not foggy or rainy, a touch of sun.) The nights are long in England near winter solstice, and the price of a long fair night is chill and frost. Lifa longies, a warm coat and hat, and central heating then become objects of gratitude. This ivy has been out all night.

Even the litter lives a classy life in Oxford. At least where the tourists are thick. (InDecember the tourist gangs are thinly populated and look rather thick in their winterclothes.

New College sundial from St. Mary's Church bell tower.
"New College" is really St. Mary College of Winchester in Oxford, founded in 1379.
It was then called "new college" to distinguish it from a pre-existing St. Mary's, which is not Oriel Colege. Obviously the nickname stuck.

Sunset from in front of the Natural History Museum, Oxford, about 4 pm, December 16, 2003. It gets dark early here; it's pretty far north.

This car is parked at the side of Littlegate Stree, Oxford, England.
I am told It's a Robin made by Reliant. It clearly has one front wheel.
I believe this was intentional. Three-wheeled cars were taxed and licenced as motocycles, and as we know, money talks. So what if the car tips onto its shoulder in hard cornering?
