A representative busy road in northern Lapland; studded tires wear away ruts
through the snow. March 12, 2002

We are driving steadily northward, out of the Tiaga; the pines have become
sparse and scrubby. March 12, 2002.

I actually forgot why it was important to take this photo. It is probably the Ivalojoki (Ivalo River) in northern Lapland. March 12, 2002

The roads in Lapland are covered with packed snow, not ice.
There is no attempt to clear the roadways with salt. The grooves in the snow are
made by the plow, which has small steel fingers. This prevents the road from getting
glazed by warm tires.

the birches of the arctic birch forest are old, and scrawny, not more than 4 meters tall.
The view is to the Southwest, near the 70th parallel. The days are 12 hours long,
but the sun sweeps across the sky in a very low arc.
This makes the evenings long and lovely.

March 12, 2002: the arctic birch forest, with a lonely pine standing sentry duty.
These trees are very old, and it's illegal to cut them.

The bluffs along what is probably the Naatamajoki (Naatama River)
Northern Lapland. The ice falls are colored by minerals leached from the rocks.

Looking far off, across the birch forest of arctic Lapland, you can see the white cap
of a Norwegian mountain. The Norwegians own all the mountains, the Finns
own the plains. This is because the Norwegians don't know that you can walk
better on level ground. March 12, 2002

Just to prove to you that Lapland is not flat -- This is the view to the south from
the ski hill at Kaunispaa, at sunset.
