The MS Amsterdam at the dock in Ketchikan, behind a municipal parking garage
and a couple of houses. It's to give you an idea of the scale. These are not small
ships.

This downtown Ketchikan Fish Shop really does sell excellent fish. We recommend
their "squaw candy" -- sugar-cured smoked salmon. They also have standard
smoked salmon, fresh or frozen wild game fish, plus unusual meats like musk ox,
reindeer, Elk, and buffalo.

Ketchikan is built on volcanic rock, just like Duluth. And this picture could as well
have been taken in Duluth.

The portside part of Ketchikan, looking north. Note the tunnel entering the hill.
This is somehow important; one street pluinges through the rock; the adjacent street
goes around the rock. The necessity for a tunnel is not clear. Perhaps the winters
are long in Alaska, and folks needed some vigorous activity then.

This street bifurcates briefly and plunges through volcanic rock for a hundred yards.
It's not clear why Ketchikan needed a tunnel. Perhaps in the winter there's not so
very much to do, and a lot of extra energy to work off. Perhaps the town's men,
instead of bowling, got together to pound down a few beers and then pound rock
of a winter's evening.

(Yes, it's the other end of the tunnel. I took this photo just in case you thought
that there might *not* be an other end.
